Editorial Services
I offer a variety of editorial services to authors of fiction and non-fiction. With a PhD in Literature and over 20 years’ experience as a professional editor, writer, and language teacher, I guarantee high quality and close attention to detail – but most importantly, a friendly, supportive ear.
As an author myself, I know how daunting it can feel to subject your manuscript to the editor's dreaded red pen. Be assured that my feedback will be honest but kind!
You can see a full list of my qualifications and experience here. Please note that for developmental editing and manuscript assessment, I only work in genres that I'm experienced with. Click on the relevant service below to see which ones.

FAQ
Why would I choose you to edit my work?
I have an industry-standard proofreading certificate from the Publishing Training Centre, UK, and my entire career has revolved around the written word.
I’ve worked as a professional freelance editor since 2015 and taught English as a Foreign Language for 15+ years, developing a strong understanding of grammar and syntax as a result. My PhD Studies on the historical novel taught me high-level analytical skills and how to write clearly, logically and unambiguously.
Do you provide a sample edit?
For proofreading and copy-editing, I always provide a 500 word sample of my work. I use this also to prepare the quotation, which may vary depending on how much editing is required.
For the manuscript assessment and developmental editing services, I'll provide illustrative comments on the first page of your work.
How do I know which service is best for me?
It all depends on where you are with your writing and what your goals are.
If you've just finished a draft of your manuscript that you're happy with, you might find the manuscript assessment service most helpful, as it provides big picture feedback on the strengths and weaknesses at a more reasonable price.
For authors seeking an agent, this service is all they might ever need, as the agent and eventually the publishing house, will provide all the other services (developmental, copy-editing, proofreading).
If you're planning to self-publish, you may want to consider the developmental editing service to ensure your work is in the best possible shape. But it is pricey, so it's down to budget too.
Once you have a mansucript you're happy with and it's time to publish, you'll at the very least require either copy-editing or proofreading, or ideally, both. These services ensure that issues with spelling, grammar, syntax, flow, etc. are cleared up to provide the best experience for your readers.
Why is editing so expensive?
Editing requires specially trained skills and experience, and is a highly intensive process.
Freelance editors have overheads to cover and need to provide for their own sick pay and holiday pay. There are also admin and marketing tasks related to the provision of the services. When all these factors are included, the actualy hourly rate of editors is significantly lower than that advertised.
