from 8 reviewsThe book arrived not even a week later after I'd bought it, signed and in perfect condition. I adore the book so much it has a special place on my shelves. Cannot wait for the rest of this series to find it's place beside this book. Definitely worth every penny!
Internal contradictions are the bane of most fantasy novels; you won't find them here. It's been a real immersive experience into the world of weaving magic - mysterious, unusual, and yet strangely... well, tangible, for the lack of a better word. The plot is a fantastic ride in its own right, I kept trying to guess ahead - and kept getting it wrong. The delivery steers clear of lazy repetitions and cliches which often plague even the heavyweights of fantasy writing, the language is crisp and precise. In short, I couldn't put this book down... can't recommend it enough!
This book has a lot of world building. You can tell the author has really thought above and beyond for this series therefore it starts out very slow and I'm thankful for it because it is not a light read, you need to pay attention for the details she put in because every single detail is important for this book and I think set the bar for the rest. I loved the characters and the intricacies that come with them. One of the things I didn't like, but it is more of an preference rather than anything else, is that it has different perspectives however I understood why the book is written that way as you can see events happening from different pov and the impact is much bigger. I just don't particularly favour it because I get easily mixed up who is talking, although the book is written in third person therefore is more manageable to keep track with whose pov you're following.
I love the magic and the taboo that comes with it. I particularly love Ina and Fay they both have a lot of fire in them and are quite cunning, clever and resourceful. The characters are so different yet you can see the similarities in them on how they think, their beliefs etc. Every character has their own story which adds more to the richness of the story and why it was so addicting!
The author's writing completely sucked me in as if nothing else mattered. Loved every second reading it and can't wait for the announcement of book 2.
[4.5⭐️] The world building was absolutely amazing and the characters great! I really fell in love with Ina and Fay, and i have great appreciation for the clear research put in about indigenous cultures. Not to mention how casual queer relationships and representations were, it was truly amazing.
The story itself is so interesting, with a unique magic system, and i love that the magic differed slightly in interpretation depending on the characters background.
I genuinely couldn’t put the series down, at first i was a bit weary about the multiple POV as it usually isn’t my cup of tea - especially having to remember so many characters at the beginning, but after a little while i was craving all the different POVs. Not to mention how cool it was to see POVs overlap.
I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
